A little bit about me

Carole Griffin

As soon as I could read, I knew words were a tool with which to express the world as I saw it.  At five years old I developed sufficient vocabulary to abstract what I saw and to express how I felt;   with the use of  metaphor, rhyme and rhythm  these skills would be  honed by life’s experiences.  These included being a working parent, several years of study culminating in a BEd. and an M.A. Degree and a career  as a teacher.  If I leave it at that, how pretentious does that sound?  Whilst all of the above is true, it tells you little about me.

I was born in Glasgow and, though brought up for most of my life in Worcestershire, I am proud of my Scottish roots.  As a five-year-old I began to suspect that the English were a little hard of hearing.  It never occurred to me that they were having difficulty in understanding my broad Glaswegian accent.  Eventually, I anglicised my accent to sound more like my peers (though it reverted quite naturally back home).  My first attempt at writing was for a competition run by Cadbury’s of  Bournville.  At the age of six  I was easily pleased with my prize – a scroll acknowledging my efforts and a packet of Cadbury’s Chocolate Finger Biscuits.

Now that I have travelled this path as a daughter, big sister, wife, mother and grandmother,  I have added to my understanding of life’s ups and downs.  It seems a good time to share these skills and these experiences and, I hope, allow others to express their own personal journeys, hopes and expectations through poetry.  Whether it is a special occasion, a memory of a person or place or an experience you want to capture with words,  give me the material and let the process of creation begin.

Whatever the occasion, email [email protected] and let the process of creation begin.
