Poem
The Road to Addiction is Short
I took a pill to cure the ache
Inside my troubled head.
I tossed and turned; a four-hour wait –
I tumbled out of bed.
The ache still there, another pill
And still my head is sore.
I have to wait four hours until
I’ll have to take two more.
I know the ache will go home soon,
And I can close the door
And leave it in the mind’s small room
Marked, ‘I’ll be back for more’.
And back it came, less than a week
My head screamed for that pill.
I know the taste of bitter-sweet –
Those cures that make me ill.
Three days of pills, four hours apart
The door is open wide.
I feel the strain upon my heart,
The struggle deep inside.
I need a lock put on that door
I need a key to fit.
My head screams out, ‘I need two more!’
I have to comfort it.
So there it is, dependent now
On pills four times a day.
Someone out there, please tell me how
To make addiction go away.
