Neologism – Lock-down. It becomes increasingly noticeable how much our senses have been deprived, because noises, smells, sounds of nature are being cloaked by the fabric of climate change, dulling every experience of the environment and depriving our senses of the purity of Nature. The world has experienced tragedy; nature took advantage to show us how to heal.
My tree is dormant with some tempting buds,
These Heralds, that the precious Spring so loves,
The trumpet orchestra of daffodils,
Asleep, so Heralds’ pockets still are filled.
But once the sun warms up augmented soil,
Enriched with winter’s leaves and creatures’ spoil,
The trumpet sounds and nature stretches out –
Green shoots, tree buds, weeds, seeds, begin to sprout.
An orchestra held tight by Winter’s grip
Finds cracks and crevices through which to slip,
And upward push towards the warmth and light,
Heralds announce, ‘This joust? Spring won this fight.’
Good news! Some fruit will come, some apples sweet,
We’ll wonder how each ewe can recognise the bleat,
Her lamb will also learn its mother’s call,
To follow and stay safe while still so small.
And Summer waits on wings of butterflies,
While people wait for cleaner, clearer skies,
Inside, not out, with noses sensing change,
The birds are louder, nature’s rearranged.
Grass grows on verges, greener than before,
And Nature’s back, fighting with tooth and claw.
The quiet roads give back what we have lost,
The air smells sweeter, but, oh, at what a cost.
Twelve weeks have gone, still joy is all around,
So let’s go viral with new things we’ve found,
Computers have a place in discourse now,
It is a contact lock-down will allow.
Our hearts go out to those risking their lives,
Who help, try to ensure the sick survive,
Have empathy with those who’ve lost someone,
And thank those helping daily life go on.
When changes come, we’re human, show you care,
The bug’s around, on surface, hand, in air,
Wash hands, be kind, alert to what’s around
On surfaces where virus can be found.
We have to win, give hope to all our young,
Protect their world, their lives and every lung,
Use changes that the hand of Nature makes,
This world of beauty is not ours to take.
