Poem
Soil, Soiled, Sold
‘Give me a subject’, I said.
‘What about councils with the power to ‘de-green’ sites and create the potential to impose inappropriate development and all that it entails,’ she said, then this happened:
Soil, Soiled, Sold
Bang
Big Bang
Big Bang, gasses
Big Bang, gasses, elements
Big Bang, gasses, elements, stars
Big Bang, gasses, elements, stars, galaxies
Big Bang, gasses, elements, stars, galaxies, universe
Big Bang, gasses, elements, stars, galaxies, universe, planets
Theories to explain the structure and processes that gave life.
Whatever the structure, the processes, the plan,
Your own version to explain how you think it began,
The science, the philosophy you choose to explore,
But know, when it is gone, there won’t be any more.
Dig down through the earth, pile up the soil,
Key structures of life, survival and toil,
From the humblest slime mould to the raptor up high,
Fractal patterns are born, laws of nature apply.
Start with the soil that gives succour to life,
Then watch spades and diggers cut down like a knife
Billions of years of some Greater Hand
Destroyed forever by another plan.
The lungs of the Earth absorb toxic air
Are choked with wet concrete everywhere,
Bricks replace trunk, with tiled canopy,
Gone is the hedge, the grass and the tree.
Add more to the noise, the pollution, the crowd,
Blanket the green field that once had been ploughed.
Ribbon the towns, one to the other,
The fate of it all, let the future discover.
