Poem
Safe from Shark Infested Waters
If you have known that feeling of being trapped in a place where you are not really welcome but you sense you are tolerated, you might relate to this experience. It is a sequel to ‘From Land to Water’:
The gates have lifted, we will be reborn.
Next time the tide turns we can swim to shore.
The shark has feasted; all our meat has gone,
Our pain and sorrow this beast did ignore.
Whilst she did smile and show some sympathy,
Her teeth were lethal as a rabid banshee.
In fairness, at the worst of times her word,
Her gestures kind could be reciprocated,
But we still sensed our presence irritated.
One final endless night to be endured
And only then our freedom be secured.
Sleep went, and went again into the stars;
The moon shone kindly through the Velux bars.
Diurnal pattern turned night into day
With warm spring sun to send us on our way.
Chattels loaded;
Goods all noted;
Scrub and clean;
Help move machine.
It really hurts
To hear his words,
“Before you go
You should know
I want those cups
And plates washed up.”
No! We can leave! Your jaws are impotent;
Your teeth are blunted by our steel resolve.
We leave these waters bloodied but unbowed,
Your parting words deemed to be insolent.
With cars piled high we drove out from that yard.
We cleared our lungs of water foul and hard,
And filled those lungs with air so fresh and pure.
We’ll bathe in springs, so healing is assured.
